Community Education: Supporting Parents, Accompanying Youth, and Cultivating Eco-Citizenship

ASS CATHO CHEFS DE FAMILLE offers structured, non-commercial educational programs in Saint-Igneuc and Jugon-les-Lacs designed to complement formal schooling and empower parents as the primary educators of their children. From after-school literacy mentorship and our 1,800-volume library to rural eco-citizenship and civic responsibility training, our volunteer educators serve every generation.

1. Integral Education and the Partnership Between Family and Community

At ASS CATHO CHEFS DE FAMILLE, education is understood not merely as the technical accumulation of academic facts, but as the integral formation of the human person—cultivating intellectual curiosity, moral conscience, artistic sensitivity, practical competence, and fraternal empathy for one's neighbors. Inspired by Catholic educational heritage, our association recognizes that mothers, fathers, and guardians are the first and most important educators of their children. However, no family is meant to carry that educational mission in isolation.

In a rural commune like Jugon-les-Lacs, where families often live in dispersed hamlets across Saint-Igneuc and Dolo, our community spaces provide a calm, structured, screen-free environment where children and adolescents can study, read classic and contemporary literature, converse with retired teachers, and discover the natural and historical wealth of Brittany. Every educational module we offer is 100% free of commercial tuition fees, financed entirely by municipal and departmental subsidies and reinvested statutory membership dues.

The Saint-Igneuc Associative Family Library (1,800+ Volumes)

Housed in our main ground-floor study room in Saint-Igneuc Bourg, our Associative Family Library has been patiently assembled over three decades through community grants and family book endowments. Cataloged and stewarded by our General Secretary and volunteer librarians, the collection includes:

  • Children's & Young Adult Literature: Illustrated storybooks for early readers, classic French and European novels, historical biographies, and poetry collections that nourish vocabulary and moral imagination.
  • Academic Reference & Study Guides: French grammar and composition manuals, mathematics problem books, historical atlases, and natural science encyclopedias used during our Wednesday and Thursday homework mentorship sessions.
  • Breton History & Local Heritage Archives: Monographs on the history of Saint-Igneuc, Jugon-les-Lacs, the Abbey of Boquen, and the traditional rural crafts and agriculture of the Côtes-d'Armor.
  • Parenting, Family Ethics & Intergenerational Care: Practical guides on early childhood development, adolescent psychology, marital communication, digital hygiene, and accompanying elderly relatives.

3. Eco-Citizenship, Intergenerational Transmission, and Civic Training

Living in the rural landscape of Saint-Igneuc and Jugon-les-Lacs—surrounded by hedgerows, meadows, streams, and historic granite architecture—gives our families a direct daily responsibility for the preservation of our natural and cultural environment. Inspired by the principle of integral ecology and stewardship of creation, our Eco-Citizenship Module connects environmental care directly with family solidarity and thrifty household wisdom.

In our courtyard garden behind the Saint-Igneuc community hall, retired farmers and master gardeners work alongside children and parents to cultivate heirloom vegetables, aromatic herbs, and pollinator-friendly flowers without synthetic chemicals. Young participants learn where food comes from, how soil health and local water quality in the Arguenon basin are protected, and how traditional rural practices—such as repairing tools, sharing surplus garden harvests with elderly neighbors, and avoiding wasteful consumption—reflect deep moral respect for both nature and neighbor.

Civic Responsibility & Complementary School Outreach

Our Education Committee maintains cordial, respectful cooperation with local educators and parents' associations across the canton of Jugon-les-Lacs. When teachers identify students who would benefit from a quiet study space, encouragement in reading aloud, or confidence-building through amateur theater, our volunteers welcome those families warmly in Saint-Igneuc.

Through our Civic Training sessions, teenagers also learn how a non-profit Association Loi 1901 operates: how minutes are kept, how collective decisions are debated respectfully, and how citizens can contribute constructively to municipal life. Many of our current adult volunteers first discovered the joy of community service as teenage participants in our Saint-Igneuc study and theater circles.

4. Pedagogical Principles, Family Reading Culture, and Summer Continuity

Why do so many families in Saint-Igneuc, Dolo, and Jugon-les-Lacs entrust their children's extracurricular hours to the educational workshops of ASS CATHO CHEFS DE FAMILLE? Over decades of field experience in the Côtes-d'Armor, our volunteer educators have refined four practical pedagogical principles that distinguish our associative learning rooms:

  • Individualized Pace Without Academic Anxiety: In a busy school classroom of twenty-eight students, a child who hesitates over fractions or French verb conjugations can easily feel discouraged. In our Saint-Igneuc study room, a retired teacher sits calmly with three or four pupils, celebrating each step of progress and restoring the child's confidence in their capacity to learn.
  • Reconnecting Generations Through Spoken & Written Language: We place strong emphasis on diction, handwriting, vocabulary enrichment, and reading aloud. When children read stories or historical accounts aloud to senior volunteers, they learn to articulate clearly and listen attentively—skills that serve them throughout their academic and civic lives.
  • Equipping Parents with Practical Home Study Habits: Education flourishes when home and workshop reinforce one another. At the end of each Wednesday and Thursday session, our volunteer mentors take ten minutes to greet parents at pick-up, sharing encouraging observations and simple, practical tips for maintaining a calm twenty-minute daily reading habit at home.
  • Summer Reading & Heritage Continuity: During July and August, when long school vacations can lead to academic regression for children without books at home, our Associative Family Library remains open four mornings a week. Children participate in summer reading challenges, botanical drawing walks along the paths of Saint-Igneuc, and historical discovery sessions free of any commercial tuition.

All educational books, notebooks, drawing supplies, and pedagogical kits used in our Saint-Igneuc classrooms are funded exclusively by municipal and departmental subsidies, educational grants, and annual statutory membership dues under RNA W221001725 and SIREN 342371317. All membership fees and dues are fully reinvested in the association's public interest missions.

Parents, grandparents, and educators wishing to visit the Saint-Igneuc Associative Library, borrow books for their household, or register a primary or middle school pupil for our Wednesday and Thursday study mentorship circles are invited to drop by during our weekly permanence hours or reach out to our Education Committee through our secretariat contact page. Together, by uniting patient adult mentorship with a warm, screen-free study environment, we help every child in Jugon-les-Lacs discover the joy of learning and civic responsibility.
